About Us

OptiPhos was developed via a joint venture between JBS United and Protein Scientific, Inc. The joint venture company, known as Phytex, LLC, is majority owned and distributed by JBS United. Phytex, LLC has an exclusive licensing arrangement with Cornell Research Foundation (Cornell University) in the phytase area. Phytex, LLC also has a licensing arrangement with Research Corporation Technologies, Inc. for use of the pichia pastoris expression system.

About JBS United

John Swisher, CEO of JBS United, founded the company in 1956 (initially known as United Feeds).  Starting with $25,000 in seed money borrowed from his family, he sold feed products directly to farmers rather than through dealers, using a college-educated sales force trained to understand the nutritional problems of the pig. From that beginning, JBS United has grown into an international leader in the animal agriculture industry providing research-based products worldwide to owners and producers of various animal species. With headquarters in Sheridan, Indiana, JBS United is an employee-owned company with annual sales revenue of $270 million and nearly 400 employees.

Research & Development
JBS United has a long history of, and remains dedicated to, pioneering research. In fact, JBS United was one of the first U.S. nutrition companies to invest it its own proprietary research facilities. We attract and hire the best and brightest minds for our research teams. Our staff of experts includes a team of Ph.D.’s with decades of experience in a variety of areas related to animal science including nutrition, enzyme technologies, reproduction, microbiology, and genetics.

We conduct extensive research across multiple species including pigs, chickens, turkeys and horses. Research trials are conducted internally as well as in conjunction with leading agricultural colleges and animal companies.

JBS United has one of the most extensive swine research facilities and capabilities in the world. We have 14 discovery research centers with more than 500 experimental pens and 24 production scale research facilities that use computerized feeding to individually monitor more than 17,000 pigs at any given time. We have the capacity to run nutrition trials for up to 45,000 animals annually through all production phases.
